Project: Getting to know your camera

Exercise: Focal Length and angle of view

Three photographs were taken within my back garden.

As per the exercise instructions, the subject of the image, the bird bath, was viewed both in camera through the view finder whilst simultaneously looking directly at the scene, then noting the focal length when each view was the same size.  I noted that this was at 70mm which is called the standard.

Another two images were taken, one at the lower focal length of 24mm and the other at the maximum of 200mm.

Secondly the three images were printed in A4 format and viewed at eye level, from the point where the images were taken, and moved in or out until the printed image looked similar in size to the real scene noted.

The distances noted for the images were:
  • 70 mm - 57 cm
  • 24 mm - 16 cm
  • 200 mm - 210 cm
